In 2002, the electricity market for 75% of the land mass and 85% of the total load of Texas was deregulated. This was the result of the 1999 Texas Legislature Senate Bill 7 which, when passed, required a retail electric market to be opened to competition by 2002. More information about your power to choose can be found on the Public Utility Commission of Texas website.
In plain terms, you now have the power to choose who provides your electricity. You are no longer required to buy electricity from the one monopoly utility.
Today, there are over 50 retail providers available for you to shop for your electricity needs. They offer over 350 electric plans that vary in rate and contract length. With that many different plans it is sometimes difficult to decide which is right for you. Also, providers create confusing plans designed to trick you into paying more than you should.
